Cherokee County Schools welcomes applications from individuals who are interested in becoming substitute teachers.
Requirements/Information for Prospective Substitute Teachers
Minimum High School Diploma; 2 – 4 year degree preferred.
Effective Teacher Training is required for non-certified applicants before application is presented for approval. A copy of the certificate must be attached to the application. Please check with Tri-County Community College for dates and times of the ETT course.

An application must be completely filled out, which includes:
A physical; (The School Based Health Center at Hiwassee Dam School will do a physical for $10.00 for substitute applicants. To make an appointment, please call Pam Swain at 644-0775.)
Withholding information including a cancelled check/or voided deposit slip
Local address and driver’s license number
Two recommendations, preferably affiliated with the Cherokee County school system
Three references from previous employers (attach to application)
An I-9 must be completed including photocopies of the social security card and driver’s license or certificate of birth
A criminal record check permission form must be completed. This completes the application packet (can be filled out when you deliver application to Central Office)
A brief interview is conducted and references are checked before the application is presented to the Board of Education for approval. The Board of Education approves substitutes four (4) times during the year: August, October, January and April. The Board meets on the 2nd Thursday of each month, and the application/interview process must be completed by one week prior to the board meeting date.
Compensation for Substitute Teaching:
Non-certified personnel – 50% of an entry level teacher’s pay on the bachelor scale, which is $141.50 for 2008-09; substitute pay is $70.77
Certified personnel – 65% of an entry level teacher’s pay, or $91.99
